Kikimora, Small Depth of Field

My beautiful kitten Kiki, named for the famous witch Kikimora.  See how Kiki's pretty face is in focus while the background is blurred?  This is a technique photographers use especially in portraiture when they want you to focus on a person's face, or on a particular object.  When only things that are a particular distance from the camera are in focus it is called having a shallow Depth of Field.  On a camera phone or point and shoot camera you can achieve this effect automatically by getting very close to your subject matter.  A landscape photo where everything (even things very far away) is in focus would have a large Depth of Field.  Try getting a natural small Depth of Field by getting up close and personal with your subject matter.
